Foot Care Tips For Teachers

Raul Wheeler

As a teacher or instructor, chances are you spend many hours on your feet in front of the class. This can lead to all sorts of painful foot conditions, from simple sore feet to plantar fasciitis, bunions, or even hip and back pain. Taking care of your feet is the only way to prevent these problems. The following tips can help you do just that:

Tip #1: Lay down a mat

If most of your on-foot time is spent in the front of the classroom lecturing, then you can take advantage of some floor cushioning to ease the stress on your feet. Cushioned anti-fatigue floor mats come in a variety of sizes, so you can find one large enough to cover the space you normally stand in or pace through. In many cases, your employer will provide you with a mat if you request one. In other cases, you may need to have one recommended by your podiatrist before your employer will front the cost. Rarely, you may need to pick one up for yourself.

Tip #2: Pick the right shoes

Shoes are one of the most important items of clothing a teacher puts on each morning because they can make or break you when it comes to pain. Choose shoes that provide sufficient arch support. Those with plenty of wiggle room for the toes are also more comfortable and less likely to cause pain. The sole inserts in your shoes can also provide more comfort. A podiatrist can determine where you put the most stress on your foot and recommend the best insoles for your needs.

Tip #3: Skip the heels

Heels aren't a good idea if you are trying to avoid foot pain. If you must wear heels, then opt for two pairs of shoes per day strategy. For every hour in the heels, spend one hour in more comfortable shoes that provide proper support. This will give the muscles in your feet time to relax. Also, make sure the heels fit properly and opt for lower heels over high versions on days when you will be spending much of your time standing in front of the class.

Tip #4: Give your feet a break

Chances are you will have some time sitting, either at your desk or on a break. In this case, keep a tennis ball handy. When you are sitting, slip off your shoes and roll the ball under your feet. This massages the kinks from foot muscles, stretches your toes, and helps prevent ligament issues.

My doctor immediately referred me to a local podiatrist for care. Since that moment, I have dedicated my free time to learning all I can about podiatry treatments. The field fascinates me in its complexity, so I decided to share the knowledge I’ve gained with you all through this site. I hope you will enjoy visiting my site daily to learn more about podiatry treatments. Thank you for coming to read through my site.
