Feet And Nutrition: How Foot-Friendly Is Your Diet?

Raul Wheeler

If you're currently struggling with dry, flaky, and painful feet, check your diet. Your diet might not be sufficient enough to keep your feet healthy. Some of the things you eat can cause inflammation and dry skin, including your favorite ice cream. Here's how your diet can affect your feet:

How Can Your Diet Hurt Your Feet?

Your sugary snacks may be a reason for your foot problems. Although your body needs a certain amount of sugar to make energy and perform different functions, eating too much refined sugar can actually harm you instead, including your feet.

Artificial sugar can trigger inflammation in the soft tissues in your feet. Inflammation can make your feet swell or ache throughout the day, night, or both. If your feet become too inflamed, you may problems wearing your shoes or standing for long periods of time.

Some people may also develop poor circulation and infections in their feet if they consume too much sugar. Poor circulation may cause the veins in your feet, legs, and ankles to enlarge, which can potentially lead to varicose veins. Varicose veins can be dangerous if the condition leads to blood clots.

With a few changes in your daily diet, you can protect your feet from inflammation and other health problems.

How Can You Improve Your Diet?

Eating less sugar during the day can help protect your feet from problems. You can replace your regular snacks with apples, strawberries, and other naturally sweet fruits. Natural foods contain many other nutrients that benefit your feet, including vitamin C and vitamin A. These vitamins can help fight inflammation in your body.

Also, add more grains, brown rice, and vegetables to your diet. The foods contain special sugars that break down slowly in your body. If sugar breaks down too fast in your body, it can increase your blood sugar or place you at risk for diabetes. Diabetes can damage the blood vessels in your feet, which can lead to poor circulation, sores, and infection.

If you still have problems with your feet, speak to a podiatrist, or foot specialist. A podiatrist can examine your feet and prescribe treatments that relieve your symptoms. You may need to place special cushions in your shoes to ease your pain and use medicated cream to moisturize your dry skin.
